Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Marten
Vice Chairman, Auditor Oversight Commission (Germany)
Professor Kai-Uwe Marten, born in 1962, has been a member of the Faculty of Mathematics and Economics at the University of Ulm since April 2003. His research interests are in the fields of auditing, especially quality assurance, public oversight, audit market research and internationalisation of accounting. Professor Marten studied Business Administration at the University of Augsburg from 1984 to 1989 and graduated with a Masters degree (Dipl.-Ök.). After one practical year with an audit firm he began working on his doctoral dissertation in summer 1990 of the Chair of Professor Dr. Dres. h.c. Adolf G. Coenenberg. In February 1994 he graduated as Dr. rer. pol. with a thesis on auditing and immediately started working on his professorial dissertation (Habilitation), which also focused on auditing. During this time he published articles in various academic journals. In February 1998, he was awarded the title of Dr. rer. pol. habil. by the University of Augsburg.
In the period from April 1997 to September 1998 Professor Marten was a locum tenens at the Chair of Accounting and Auditing at the Technical University of Berlin. From October 1998 until March 2003 he was the Head of the Chair of Accounting and Auditing at the University of Wuppertal. From 1999 to 2002, Professor Marten was a visiting lecturer at the Management Academy in Koblenz/Vallendar.
Professor Marten is a member of various professional associations, such as the European Accounting Association, the American Accounting Association, the Verein für Socialpolitik and the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e.V. In addition, he is a member of the German Accounting Standards Committee (GASC) e.V. and the Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft.
Currently Professor Marten is an appointed member and head of the committee "External and Internal Corporate Control" of the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e.V. on whose advisory council he belongs to. From 2001 to 2004 Professor Marten was Vice-Chairman of the Public Oversight Board (POB) on Quality Assurance which was located at the German Chamber of Statutory Auditors. Since 2005, he has been an appointed member and Vice-Chairman of the Auditor Oversight Commission (AOC) which is the successor commission of the POB.
Since October 2005, he has been engaged as an observer of the Public Interest Oversight Board (PIOB) at the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) for the EU-Commission. Furthermore Professor Marten is associated with the "European Group of Auditors´ Oversight Bodies" (EGAOB) since it has been established by the EU-Commission in December 2005. In cooperation with other European colleagues, Professor Marten founded the European Auditing Research Network (EARNet) in April 2000, which currently consists of approximately 200 members. The intention of the network is to promote audit research in Europe. Professor Marten is a member of its Scientific Committee.
As a founding member in March 2004, Professor Marten remains the Vice-Chairman of the Ulmer Forum für Wirtschaftswissenschaften (UFW) e.V. The body supports active dialogue between science and business in combination with lecture events. Since October 2004, Professor Marten has held the position of Dean of Studies in Economics at the University of Ulm.
From 2004 to 2007, Professor Marten was a member of the supervisory board of a corporation located in southern Germany.
